Cable Knit Headband— Free Pattern
I am so excited to share with you my latest creation! Here you will find my free pattern to make this lovely cable knit headband or ear warmer. I used a fine 3-ply virgin wool to make this, but feel free to experiment. There are no decreases or buttonholes in this cable knit pattern, making it great for all of you adventurous beginners out there. Here’s how to make one:
Materials: Cable needle, approximately 80 yards of yarn, button, size 6 knitting needles, darning needle
Cast on 24
Rows 1, 3, 7, 9 (Right side rows) Knit 4, Purl 4, Knit 8, Purl 4, Knit 4
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 (Wrong side rows) Purl 4, Knit 4, Purl 8, Knit 4, Purl 4
Row 5 (Cable row on right side) Knit 4, Purl 4, Slip next 4 stitches to cable needle (as shown in image below) and hold in front of work, Knit next 4 stitches, Knit 4 from cable needle, Purl 4, Knit 4
Continue in this pattern until you have desired circumference. I made 13 cable patterns and it fits well.
Cast off (following the knit, purl pattern of your last row)
Sew on button and weave in ends. Use the hole that the cable makes as a button hole.

Thank you! Yes, the button certainly adds that final touch, doesn’t it? My mother gave me a big pile of buttons and this was in it, so I am very sorry but I’m not sure where the button originates from. Etsy certainly has plenty of artisans that make buttons…maybe look there?
happy crafting!
